I have a confession to make. I have been an independent full time sales trainer since
August 29, 1990, and I have never made a cold call since that date!
I have never picked up the phone and called someone cold or knocked on a door without

Only one in thirty-three people who try to become an independent sales trainer or

In some of my early selling jobs I was forced to pick up the phone and call people cold. I
became pretty good at it. I got over the rejection and sarcastic remarks that I was faced
with every day. It takes about 100 calls to condition your mind and stop caring what
people say or think. I don't mind making cold calls. If they worked I would be
"dialing for dollars" all day long.
However, it didn't take long to realize that cold calling was not a very professional or
productive way to present your services. Cold calling is the MAIN reason selling has such
a high turnover rate.
My first adventures in selling were life insurance, food plans and job recruiting. I
failed BIG TIME. It was not until I realized that before you call on someone you have to
WARM THEM UP! Later I purchased a meat company that was ready to go out of business. As I
was looking for a miracle to save this business and my reputation, I found a file with
about 3,000 invoices from past customers. My first impulse was to start calling them.
However, instead I went to the post office and purchased 3000 pre-stamped post cards, had
my employees write a hand written message on the card with my signature and mailed them.
Over the next 90 days we had more than 1500 customers come in!! A 50% return on the
mailing. This is UNHEARD OF! But it just goes to show you the power of a personal card.
I finally realized that selling was not a game of chance. I previously thought all I had
to do was "make one more call" and everything would fall into place. Until I
learned the value of the "pre-approach" I could make as many "one more
calls" as possible and still fall flat on my face! And what is the pre-approach? Warm

The least
expensive is a post card, 1 point .31 cents and .27 cents
postage = .58 cents.
The
most sent card is a regular greeting in a envelope with a blue font that
looks exactly like it was hand addressed and a real stamp. =
.31 x 2 + .44 = 1.06.
And the most expensive is a 2 fold card with an
uploaded picture, 3 points for the card plus 1 point for the picture and
.44 cents postage = .31 x 4 + .44 =
$1.70.

With all that in mind you can see why this is a great
